Many summertime activities can cause back pain, so in today’s post, we’ll feature a few points to keep in mind as you prepare to have some fun in the sun.

Preventing Summertime Back Pain

Slow Down

Many people find themselves energized and ready to get outside as soon as the first day of summer arrives, but you should keep in mind that jumping back into anything too quickly can cause an injury, or exacerbate an existing one. Whether you’re playing basketball at your favorite outdoor court, practicing your tennis game, or jumping into the pool for a refreshing swim, it’s always important to give your body time to adjust. As we noted in a previous post, you should also take some time to stretch properly and loosen up tight muscles.

Carefully Maintain Your Landscape

Gardening and lawn care are two of the most common causes of summertime back pain. Raking leaves, bending over to pull weeds in the garden, and meticulously planting your summer crops can all cause you to bend and put undue pressure on your spine. No matter what kind of landscaping projects you plan to tackle this summer, be sure to keep your back straight, take breaks, and periodically stand up to stretch.

Maintain Good Mowing Posture

Mowing the lawn is one of the easiest ways to injure your back during the summer. To start, the bending and twisting motion required to start the engine is notorious for causing back strains. However, back pain is more frequently caused by poor posture while mowing. Many mowers will automatically steer themselves in a given direction, but both these models and manual models can cause you to bend forward as you guide the mower toward one end of the lawn. Every degree your head bends forward puts approximately 10 extra pounds of weight on your lower back, so always be mindful of your posture when mowing.

Take plenty of breaks if you get tired, and don’t be embarrassed if you need to ask for help. We’re not here to tell you that a green lawn isn’t important, but if you’re having trouble maintaining your lawn without back pain, then you may want to consider hiring a professional.

Take Up Swimming

As we noted in a previous post, exercising frequently is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy back and prevent pain from worsening. If you suffer from mild back pain, then try doing laps from one end of the pool to the other. If you’ve sustained an injury or are currently dealing with a painful back condition, then you may want to try low-impact water aerobics that work your body without straining your muscles and joints.

Be Wary of Flip-Flops

Flip-flops may be a summertime staple, but we recommend giving them the boot. Good posture begins with your footwear, and flip-flops offer almost no support for the rest of your body. Instead of putting on flip-flops when you head out to do yard work or take a dip in the pool, invest in a pair of high-quality sandals that support your feet and allow you to walk comfortably. Your entire body will thank you! 

Prepare for Planes

Unless you’re flying in first class, you’re probably going to have an uncomfortable seat on any airplane you board this summer. Airlines have notoriously bare-bones seating, so bring along a pillow or back support product that can help you maintain a straight spine during the flight. You’ll also want to bring along a small pillow for your neck, as the majority of airplane seats force your neck into an unnatural position. If you’re bringing heavy bags to your destination, be sure to check them or ask for assistance when lifting them into the overhead bins.
