Last time, we started discussing what healthy options for your spine might include in the preliminary stages of back pain and how to prevent similar ailments. In this blog, we’ll continue to explore the various ways that you can support your spine health in your day-to-day life. It’s important to value the health and longevity of your spine, as it ensures mobility and functionality for your entire body as you age. So don’t take your spine for granted, and start treating it right now with a few of these tips that will encourage better whole body and spine health now.

The Right Shoes

Don’t worry, we aren’t suggesting you trade your favorite heels for a pair of Posturepedic tennis. But we’re suggesting that you invest in the proper footwear for exercise and long-distance walking. As fun as it sounds to look cute in your favorite flats as you walk all over London on your trip, you should think about your back and your feet. Long-distance walking and any kind of exercise should be paired with the right shoes to support your health and your spine in the moment. Good shoes will offer a supportive base that ensures your spine and body will remain in easy alignment as you work and move. This doesn’t have to just apply to your favorite pair of tennis shoes, either. This can be easily matched without sacrificing the look of your outfit, too.

To find a pair of shoes that will work with your body instead of against your body, you’ll need to look for a few key factors. When you’re trying on a shoe, make sure that it fits snuggly against your heel but is not too tight. You’ll just want it to not be slipping around in the shoe as you traverse. You’ll also notice as you walk that the shoe will not encourage pronation or supination as you walk. That means that you won’t feel or see the shoe making your foot roll as you go.

Be Mindful Of Sitting

You wouldn’t think it, as sitting is so relaxing and calming, but it’s quite bad for your back. When you sit, the discs in your back are pressed upon and experience more pressure and stress that can wear them down and cause problems. Long periods of sitting around often aggravates and can sometimes even create a bad back condition. Plus, if you work an office job, you’ll notice your natural tendency when looking at a screen is to slouch and lean forward toward the screen. This behavior doesn’t do your back any favors. This activity stresses the lumbar discs more and is known to cause permanent damage when it’s overdone. Be sure to invest in a good office chair and practice good posture when sitting.
