Have you been waking up with an aching back, or struggling with back pain throughout the day? Back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the country, and many people don’t know that their habits are causing their symptoms. In today’s post, we’ll discuss three mistakes many people make that can lead to back pain and other problematic conditions.

The Spine Care Center provides a wide variety of back pain treatment options in Manassas, and we would love to help you resolve your symptoms and get back to living your life. Request an appointment with one of our spine specialists through this page, and continue reading below to learn more about how you may be inadvertently hurting your back.

Slouching

Poor posture is one of the most common causes of back pain. The spine is able to support your weight and keep your body flexible, but standing and sitting in a slouched position puts a great deal of strain on the low back.

To fix poor standing posture, hold your head high with your neck in line with the rest of your spine. Avoid letting your shoulders come forward, and check to make sure that your pelvis isn’t tilted inward or outward.

We know that many of our patients work desk jobs, and if you sit at a computer for the majority of your day, then it’s important to make sure that you’re sitting with good posture. Place both of your feet flat on the floor to avoid putting undue strain on your knees, and adjust your monitors so that your eyes are approximately level with the top of the screen. If necessary, invest in a new chair or a lumbar support add-on to help you stay comfortable throughout the day.

Skipping the Gym

It’s easy to skip the gym after a long day of work, but exercise is actually one of the best ways to promote good spine health. Core exercises are great for the low back, and even something as simple as walking on a treadmill can help to loosen your back and stretch out your muscles. If you don’t have time to go to the gym every day, then try to make time in the evenings to stretch and work on your mobility. All habits take time to develop, but stretching is one of the best back pain treatments there is!

Waiting to Speak to a Spine Doctor

If you’re experiencing back pain for an extended period of time, then it’s important to speak with a spine doctor about your symptoms. A number of serious spinal conditions share similar symptoms, and you don’t want your condition to worsen because you delayed making an appointment. Even if your condition doesn’t require a major intervention, it’s a good idea to have your symptoms documented in the event that your pain returns at a future date.
