Disc protrusions occur when damaged discs begin to move out of place. The discs in the spine age with the rest of the body and can lead to a host of problematic symptoms as time goes on. In fact, disc protrusion is a leading cause of neck and back pain.
Also known as spinal disc deterioration, disc protrusion can be present without any significant symptoms. As we noted above, disc protrusion occurs naturally with the aging process, but if any traumatic injuries to the spine occur, then the result can be an aggravated condition. For instance, the nerves in the surrounding area may become irritated when touched by the protruding disc. Numbness, tingling, traveling pain, and stiffness are all common symptoms that are caused by disc protrusions.
